Whilst out enjoying the beautiful weather recently up in the hills near home, it got me thinking (as cycling often does) about a virtual learning experience I'm designing for a client about Leading People.

What is it that makes someone a great leader and why do others choose to follow them? It made me reflect on the best leader I had, an amazing guy - Simon Spiller - what made him such a great leader to me? To sum up what he did, that I still share with learners today...

  1. He believed in me, no matter what.

  2. He trusted me to do my job and achieve my goals.

  3. He gave me the freedom to develop and make my own choices.

I love the fact that I met up with him again a few years ago, we have both moved on to successfully managing our own businesses, and I realised just how much influence he had (and still has!) on my approach to developing others into being great leaders too.

Who has been a big influence in your leadership journey and why? I'd love to hear your story!

On a final note, a video (yes it's an old but gold one) that the best leader I had shared with me once about what we can learn about leadership from Geese. I still smile when I watch it, I hope it makes you smile too.
